Are you looking for a long-lasting roof for your garage? Something that will withstand the test of time, bad weather, sunlight, etc? Then here are three good choices for you to look at:
Slate
Slate roofing is one of the most durable types of roofing available. Slate is a type of natural rock, which has the ability to be broken into rather thin sheets. This makes it excellent for roofing. It is also relatively impervious to water, which means it withstands frost very well without breaking. Slate roofing usually lasts somewhere between 50-200 years; there is in fact a saxon chapel in Britain which still sports its original slate roof – from the 8th century. Add to durability the fact that slate is also quite beautiful, and you have a winner.
Clay tile roofing
This is known to have been used at least as early as the ancient greeks – simply because tile fragments have been found that date back to that time. Clay tile roofing can last a long time – easily 100 years or more – but it depends on a lot of factors. If the tile is not glazed, it will absorb rainwater to some degree – which, in conjunction with the onset of frost – could cause damage to the tile. It is also important to verify and maintain the strength and integrity of the underlying construction – but that is also the case with slate. Clay tiles come in many nuances of earthy colors – red, brown, black, blueish and yellow are common. There is also a large variety of shapes, meaning there is likely a clay tile roof for every taste. This sort of roofing material is not as expensive as slate, and not quite as heavy.
Copper roofing
Another oldie in the roofing materials department. Copper has been used for roofing purposes for centuries – not least for some of the great european cathedrals. Lifespan depends on thickness of the copper sheet used, but even more so on using proper construction methods. Expect a copper roof to last around 75 to 100 years for residential use. Copper has the advantage over the above mentioned materials that it is much more ductile, making it much more flexible to design with.
Those were just three of many types of roofing material available today – but three that are long-lasting and high-quality. All of them are worthy of your next roofing project.
