How To Get The Best Roofing Quotes

When you are in the market for a new roof for your garage or your home – or you just need to have some repairs done – you will of course make sure you get the best deal possible. Money isn’t everything of course, so quality and a sensible timeframe for the work should also be among your selection criteria. There is no point in getting cheap roofing services, if the quality isn’t up to par or it takes too long for the work to be finished.

You simply need to shop around for roofing quotes, the same way you would for anything else. The first task is to talk to everyone you know – can anyone recommend someone? Which roofing company does good work – which one should you avoid at all costs? That sort of information will be invaluable to you, as it will allow to filter out some of the contractors beforehand. Hopefully you are then left with some capable and honest companies. When you know who you might want to hire, proceed by making appointments with a handful of them. Not too many companies – some might charge you for the quote, so you want to keep it to a minimum. But perhaps between 3-5 different roofing service companies.

The companies you have asked for quotes, will send over a representative to inspect the roof – or, if it does not yet exist, to discuss it with you. If you are having an existing roof repaired or replaced, make sure you are present when the roofer does the inspection. You can then explain what you feel should be done, and the roofer can chime in with his or her opinion and experience. Be very clear about what you want and expect, but at the same time be open to suggestions from a professional – there might be something you haven’t thought about, but which needs attention. At this point, do not sign anything! You are still gathering information and quotes, so it is too early to commit to one offer.

To be able to properly compare the roofing quotes you get, you should of course make sure the work mentioned is the same from all the contractors. It won’t do you any good if one guy gives you a price on replacing the whole roof, if another guy insists you only have to have your ridge vents replaced. Make sure offers are comparable! Also make sure materials are specified to the point where you can compare them on quality. The quotes should also offer you an estimated time-frame for the work in question.

Finally, when you have all offers in, you can start bargaining if you like. Perhaps one contractor seemed more knowledgable than the others, but he is only the third best on price. Tell him that you really want him to do the job – flatter him a bit – if he could only reduce his price a bit. It might work and it might not, but it is always worth a shot. In the end, once you have committed to the best offer, don’t forget to make sure you get what you were promised. The next time someone asks for a good roofing service, you will be the one giving sage advice.
