Well, as the title states, this advice really is free! We can all use a little free advice now and then – especially on something as potentially costly as roofing. Often, it is very small mistakes that end up costing us large sums of money, when we hire contractors to work on our homes. I will try to pass on a few tips you can use when you are hiring a roofer for something like garage roofing.
The top tip for hiring contractors, is to always get roofing quotes on the work to be done – and always more than one! Call up around three different companies – any less won’t tell you much about what a fair price is, and any more will start to become confusing when it is time to choose. The reason you do it at all, is not just to find the cheapest roofer – but also to try and pre-evaluate what you can expect.
A roofing quote can tell you many things about the sort of work you can expect – from the price of it, to the quality of the work and the communication skills of the roofer. The latter may not sound very important or relevant, but in fact, it is perhaps the most important aspect of hiring someone! For one thing: What is mentioned on the quote? Which parts of the roof does he say, he is going to fix? Are they the same as you expected? What materials will he be using? How many hours does he expect to be spending on the work? The more detailed the quote is, the more you know that he has thought the work through – and the better his ability to communicate what must be important to all his clients.
Of course, there are still some roofers who don’t do much in terms of talking or making detailed lists of what they intend to do. They may still do a great job – but you cannot know it from looking at the quote. But if they come with great references, then by all means hire them!
